Gucci Donald Duck Horsebit Leather Loafers

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have surely spotted Disney’s beloved Donald Duck making a cameo in Gucci’s current Spring-Summer 2017 collection. Why Donald, you ask? Gucci doesn’t say, but given how eclectic and idiosyncratic Alessandro Michelle has been at Italian luxury house since he took over the design helm, is it really any surprise?

Appearing on a multitude of pieces from the menswear collection, from RTW to bags and accessories, it is this pair of Horsebit leather loafers that takes the cake, with a pair of appliqués on either shoe, one of a lobster, the other of Donald Duck. Why this unusual combination? Nobody really knows, but the truth of the matter is this. Your inner kid will rejoice at the opportunity to relive those childhood days, while your adult mature self will appreciate a pair of functional working shoes that comes complete with a sense of humour.

Priced at SGD2130, it is now available at Gucci boutiques in Singapore, along with a selection of other Donald Duck-themed pieces.

Gucci Lilith Top Handle Bag

Categories:Other Brands

If you asked me what bag at Gucci today still epitomises the past and the present as far as their handbags are concerned, this would be it. Those familiar with the Italian luxury house’s bags of yore will find the bamboo handle familiar, a Gucci signature that’s still keep alive and well under the auspices of sitting Creative Director Alessandro Michele.

Having seen the process for myself when I visited their bag production facility in the outskirts of Florence some years back, I can tell you this much. As simple as it might look, each bamboo handle still has to go through hours and hours of skilled craftsmanship, a single artisan crouched over an open flame as he exposes the bamboo rods to heat, slowly bending them bit by bit before it takes its eventual curved shape. Layers upon layers of a special varnish are also applied to give it that shine, as well as to keep it in an almost pristine condition for years to come.

From the handle down, however, and it’s a different story. Obviously inspired by vintage references, Michele draws upon a new icon of house, the snake, and uses it to great effect on the Lilith. Named so because it’s believed to be the name of Adam’s first wife in midrashic literature (you know how the story ends) with the snake tempting both of them.

But beyond the name, the bag is also a beautiful example of vintage-chic that’s big at Gucci these days, the bag sold with two slings, one of leather, the other in grosgrain. The perfect bag for ladies-who-lunch, it also comes in at least 2 sizes at the moment, a Small (26 cm by 24 cm) and a Medium (33 cm by 22 cm) with both sizes now available at Gucci boutiques in Singapore, including the newly-opened flagship at ION Orchard.

Gucci GucciGhost Bag

Categories:Other Brands

IMAGE: GUCCI

If you’ve been following Gucci’s Fall-Winter 2016 collection closely, you would have noticed a small line-up of RTW, bags and accessories for both men and women covered in graffiti.

Created by Brooklyn artist Trevor Andrew, aka Trouble Andrew, who first started out covering every surface he could find with his interpretation of the iconic Gucci logo and posting the images to his personal Instagram account, each hash-tagged #GucciGhost. It caught the attention of Gucci, but not for all the wrong reasons. Creative Director Alessandro Michele invited him to collaborate on a collection for Gucci, gave him free reign and the rest, as they say, is history.

IMAGE: GUCCI

What’s the end result? Besides Trouble Andrew’s scrawled interpretation of the iconic house monogram in blue with yellow stars that you’ll see on everything from bags to iPhone cases, you’ll also see more understated pieces that come with his own slogans, including one that says Life Is Gucci that’s printed boldly across a clutch. Another says Egg (the two Gs facing each other like you see in Gucci’s monogram pattern) while a third features a hand-drawn diamond, just because.

Already available in Singapore at Gucci boutiques in Marina Bay Sands and Paragon, there is something for everything for everyone, fromSGD300 plus iPhone cases to tees that cost around SGD500. Then there are the bags, which will cost from around SGD900 for a flat clutch to a few thousand for a squarish hand-held tote.

Well well, look what we found here. It sure looks like this Gucci Pearl Studded Padlock Bag came out straight from a fairytale book. It’s that beautiful that we are 100% certain that Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Belle might be interested in bringing it to the royal ball.

A small structured chain shoulder bags that feature a key lock closure; this precious Gucci creation is the crème de la crème from all the other shoulder bags out there.

You might think you’ve seen this before but couldn’t quite pinpoint out where, and we’re here to break it up to you that yes, we’ve featured it before but this time around it comes with pearls and studs as an added embellishments.

A statement bag, the key lock closure is pulled straight from the archives while the key is placed in a leather key case. It also has a sliding chain strap therefore you can transform it from being a shoulder bag or a hand bag in an instant since the chains also act as a top handle.

This Gucci goody also has gold toned studs and glass GG Pearl studs, has an interior open pocket and one side gusset. What’s more surprising is that it comes in three bold colors you can choose from: pink leather, hibiscus red leather and black leather.

Fall-Winter 2016 Gucci Ad Campaign

Categories:Other Brands

I recall a conversation I had with an esteemed editor who met up with Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele recently in London, and if I remembered correctly, the editor mentioned something about the designer ‘living in his own world’. And it’s exactly this unique world perspective that has given the historied Italian luxury house new life and turned her fortunes around almost overnight.

You’ll see this world in his clothes, in his accessories, but the starting point for any collection will always be the ad campaigns, which started on crowded streets to underground train stations and most recently, a tropical aviary complete with pink flamingos. Yes, nothing normal here, but normal it seems, isn’t in Michele’s vocabulary to begin with.

For the Fall-Winter 2016 ad campaign which just hit the interwebs today, we have Glen Luchford lensing his 4th consecutive campaign (or is it the 5th one?) for Gucci, shot on various locations in Tokyo from a pachinko parlour to a park and even the interior of a traditional Japanese house, complete with tatami mats. There are crowded streets, there are soap bubbles, there’s even a bowl of goldfish, with each campaign image subtitled with words like ‘street sounds’, ‘pop’ and ‘relentless buzzing sound’.

You don’t have to try to break it down and try to psychoanalyse it intently for its alternative meaning, you just have to sit back and enjoy Michele’s world. And figure out what you’ll be buying from the collection too, of course.
